7 time pro bowler pays Bears visit

Former St. Louis Ram Orlando Pace visited the Bears today at Halas Hall. The former number one overall pick has battled injuries the past few seasons. Regardless of his past injuries he would be a major upgrade at the tackle position. He would be an excellent mentor for 2008 first round pick Chris Williams. Pace is very familiar with Coach Lovie Smith. Smith was the defensive coordinator with the Rams. No details have been released on what came from the visit, but stay tuned to Chicago Sports Bloggers for more information

Piniella names Kevin Gregg as Cubs closer

MESA, Ariz. -- Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella picked Kevin Gregg to be the team's closer heading into the season.

Gregg beat out Carlos Marmol, the Cubs' top set-up man last year. They both spent spring training vying to replace All-Star closer Kerry Wood, who signed with Cleveland during the offseason.

"Gregg came in here and hasn't given up a run all spring," Piniella said Sunday. "I think leaving spring training, we're a better team the way we've put this thing together."

The Cubs obtained the 30-year-old Gregg in an offseason trade with Florida. Last season, he saved 29 games for the Marlins.

The right-hander also had 32 saves in 2007 and has 62 for his career, which began with the Angels.

"That's where I'm comfortable. That's what I've done for the last couple of years," Gregg said. "I'm excited about getting out there in a new year."

Marmol, who also pitched for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, entered Sunday with a 1-1 record and 4.50 ERA in spring training. He has hit five batters with pitches.

"We said we'd let both pitchers compete here in the spring, and they both pitched well," Piniella said. "I'm fortunate that I have two pitchers here that I have confidence in that can do that job."

Marmol returns to his role of set-up man to begin the season.

"Disappointed, yeah," Marmol said. "I can't control this."

Hawks look to seperate themselves from 5th place Canucks tonight at the UC

The Blackhawks welcome the Vancouver Canucks to the United Center tonight for a 6pm puck drop. This matchup is a very intriguing one, as it is quite possibly a preview of a first round playoff series. The Canucks currently sit in 5th place in the western conference, 2 points behind the Hawks. No matter what, Chicago will remain in 4th place after tonight, due to the fact that the Hawks have played one less game and therefore own the tiebreak. A win for the Hawks tonight would be monumental in their effort to maintain their position in 4th place and home ice advantage in the 4th round of the playoffs. A regulation win would put the Hawks 4 points up, with a game still in hand.

The Canucks' biggest weapons are twins Henrik and Daniel Sedin, who are the Canucks' top scorers on the season. The mid-season acquisition of veteran Mats Sundin also provides a boost. Captain Goaltender Roberto Luongo is one of the elite in the NHL, and can steal a game at any given time. The Hawks will need to develop quality scoring chances if they want to beat Luongo and this Canucks team.

Payback is on the mind as Blackhawks gear up for New Jersey

The Blackhawks welcome the New Jersey Devils (47-23-3) to the United Center tonight for a game that has major implications for both clubs. It was only a week and a half ago that Martin Brodeur set the all-time goaltender wins record against the Chicago Blackhawks, and you can bet that game is still fresh in the minds of every Blackhawk player. The outlook for tonight's game looks significantly different than that meeting however, as the Hawks are playing with double the confidence they were at that point, and this time it's on home ice. The Hawks, as we know, are scrapping for every point they can obtain to hold on to the all-important 4th spot in the western conference. A win tonight moves would move them 4 points ahead of the Vancouver Canucks, which would be much-needed breathing room as they gear up for a head-to-head clash this Sunday night. The Devils, who have already clinched a spot in the Eastern Conference Playoffs, still have much to play for as they look to solidify their spot in 2nd place, and possibly make a run at 1st place Boston if things fall their way in the closing weeks of the regular season. The Hawks will continue to ride Nikolai Khabibulin, as he will once again start in net for Chicago. Expect the lines and defensive pairings to be the same as wednesday's against San Jose. The New Jersey Devils are led in most statistical categories by Zach Parise, a 24-year old left winger who is quite possibly the most underrated player in the NHL. Parise has 41 goals, 88 points, and is currently listed as a +30. Look for him and Patrick Elias to lead the offensive charge for the explosive New Jersey attack. Puck drop is slotted for 7:30 PM, and can be viewed on Comcast Sportsnet Chicago.

A big thank you goes out to the St.Louis Blues for taking care of business on Thursday night, knocking off the Canucks 3-2. This result was a big one for the Hawks, as they now maintain a 2 point lead with a game in hand heading into tonight's action. The Columbus Blue Jackets continued to maintain their pace, winning their matchup over a struggling Calgary team 5-0. Columbus remains 2 points behind Vancouver, but 4 points behind Chicago while playing 2 more games.

The Canucks play a very winnable game against the bottom-feeding Colorado Avalanche tonight, and will be looking to avenge last night's loss.

Movin' On Up: Bulls Deny D-Wade, Heat

Dwyane Wade attempted to will his way to a victory to cap off his homecoming night in Chicago. John Salmons and the rest of the Bulls squad proved to be a tough date for the MVP candidate.

After the Heat took a 49-47 lead at half, the Bulls took charge early in the third quarter going on a 13-3 run and taking a 64-56 lead. John Salmons sparked the run with a 3-pointer and a hard drive to the basket. Kirk Hinrich joined in with another 3-pointer. After another score by Salmons, Derrick Rose threw a lob pass to Tyrus Thomas with Thomas throwing it down on Wade and drawing the foul. At this point, the Bulls had taken the momentum and the control of the game.

Adding another win under their belt, the Bulls have seized the 7th spot in the East with Detroit also losing to L.A. Salmons continued his hot streak scoring 27 points. Tyrus Thomas added a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Hinrich scored 13 points in his second start of the season and Derrick rose contributed nine points and seven assists off the bench.

This was an all around well balanced attack that Miami couldn't stop. D-Wade was able to score 31 points but the rest of his team was held ineffective for the second half. The Heat have lost 2 straights games and are losing ground with the Charlotte Bobcats not too far behind. The Bulls are in shape to make a great stretch run and are quickly becoming a threat that no one wants to face in the first round of the playoffs.

Lovie: Vick deserves another chance

Bears coach Lovie was quoted saying that he believes that Mike Vick deserves another shot at playing in the NFL. Saying that although he is "sold" on Orton he would give Vick a look. Also it has been said the Bears are taking a good look at former West Virginia QB Pat White. Personally I would love to see Vick in a Bears uniform. I don't think it would ever happen but if it was could do so much with a guy of his skill set. A former MVP candidate that will still be 29 and with so much to prove could be a very good fit.

Blackhawks blow 3-goal lead, but prevail in shootout

Against a team as explosive as the San Jose Sharks, the cliche "no lead is safe" is used quite often. That term was proven absolutely correct on wednesday night, but the Hawks were able to avoid a potentially devastating loss by pulling out a shootout win, 6-5. The Blackhawks had one of their best first periods of the season, as they took a 3-1 lead into the dressing room after goals by Marty Havlat, Andrew Ladd, and Dustin Byfuglien. From then on, however, the night was spent trying to hold off a furious San Jose offensive attack, as the Sharks chipped away at the lead. The Sharks got some help from the hockey gods, as two of their goals accidentally went into the net off Blackhawk players. The Hawks had a 5-3 lead at the halfway point of the 3rd period, but Devin Setoguchi scored on a breakaway goal to bring his team within one. At the 17:52 mark of the 3rd period, team captain Joe Thornton drove hard to the net and slid one under Nikolai Khabibulin's pads to tie the game and send it to overtime. Most of the overtime was controlled by the Blackhawks, as they had numerous scoring chances. They took this momentum into the shootout, as Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews each scored to earn the Hawks a very important victory.

This win can be owed almost entirely to the offensive line of Dave Bolland, Andrew Ladd, and Martin Havlat. This line has been the Hawks' most consistent all season long, and they proved their worth again last night as the line combined for 7 points (3 goals, 4 assists). Nikolai Khabibulin started the game strong, but a combination of terrible luck and some Sharks momentum led to what looked like a bad game in the stat book. Khabi was on when it mattered most, stuffing Jeremy Roenick in front of a booing 21,812 fans in the shootout. The win means that the Hawks finish the season series a very impressive 2-1-1 against San Jose this season. This bodes well when thinking about the very real possibility of these two teams meeting in the 2nd round in the upcoming Stanley Cup Playoffs (I really enjoy saying those three words when referring to the Hawks).

The win was a very big one for the Hawks in terms of the standings, as they maintained their position in 4th place, stretching their lead to 2 points over the Vancouver Canucks. The Canucks travel to St.Louis tonight for a game that should theoretically be a dogfight, as the Blues are fighting for a playoff spot of their own. The Hawks' next game will be with a very good New Jersey Devils team on friday night at the United Center. Look for a preview tomorrow right here at Chicago Sports Bloggers!




*Food for thought*

Something regarding Blackhawks playoff scheduling has recently been brought to my attention by a member of the Chicago Blackhawks Message Boards. IF (a very big "if") the Blackhawks earn home ice in the first round, it is almost a 100% certainty that Game 1 will be held on THURSDAY night, April 16th, not wednesday the 15th. This is due to a Chicago Bulls home game that is scheduled for the 15th. Just thought I'd share this info for anybody that may have tickets to this game, or a wedding, funeral, birthday party, etc. that they can now *ahem*...reschedule...

Bears finally getting the hint that the off season has started?

The Chicago Bears yesterday addressed their need at Offensive Tackle Kevin Shaffer formally of the Cleveland Browns. He is a 7 year vet that has started the 47 of 48 games. This move adds some well needed depth to the line. Making this move might also mean that the Bears will not address the Offensive line with the 18th pick in this years NFL draft. Maybe even more important is that it was reported on ESPN that the Bears in fact are one of the 10 teams that have called about Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler. I highly doubt the Bears get Cutler but the idea of Jerry Angelo finally picking up the phone is good to hear. Now that the draft is less than one month away don't be if QB from Kansas State Josh Freeman is on the board when the Bears pick that they decide to take him. Could be a good fit with the Bears and push Kyle Orton. It's proven most players play better when they have competition for their job. Also if Orton was to get hurt the Bears really don't have a legit back-up. Caleb Hanie and Brett Basanez are not your ideal back-ups when you have the chance to win the weakest division in football. This will be a very interesting draft. Will the Bears blow it again? Trade the up or trade down? Or get a play maker such as a Darius Hayward-Bey? Only time will tell. The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that single-game tickets for potential 2009 Stanley Cup Playoff contests will go on sale to the general public on Tuesday, March 31 at 10:00 A.M.

Fans can purchase tickets at the United Center Ticket Office (1901 W. Madison in Chicago), The Blackhawks Store (333 N. Michigan in Chicago) or by visiting any Ticketmaster outlet, logging on to ticketmaster.com or calling (312) 559-1212.

The Blackhawks (38-22-11) currently hold the fourth seed in the Western Conference through 71 games and are just one point shy of matching the 2007-08 squad’s total of 88 points (40-34-8) in 82 contests.

Each customer will be limited to eight (8) total tickets with no more than four (4) for one game. Refunds for any un-played playoff games will be available at the point of purchase. In that event, the credit card used to purchase tickets by fans using the internet of phone will be automatically credited, less any applicable processing fee.

Defenseman Jordan Hendry was re-assigned to the Rockford Icehogs today, leading one to believe Cam Barker is back and ready to play. Expect the six dressed defensemen to be Seabrook, Keith, Campbell, Barker, Hjalmarsson, and Johnson. Those 6 could very well be the ones in the line-up for Game 1 in mid-April, depending on their performance in the remaining games and how many more chances Joel Quenneville plans on giving Matt walker.

Salmons Leading the Surge

Snaps all around for the Bulls front office pulling off the most efficient trade of the season. New Bull John Salmons is everything the Bulls thought Luol Deng would be.

The coaching staff wasn't apt to throw Salmons into the mix when he first arrived as Deng and Ben Gordon were still getting their respective minutes. During his time in Sacramento he was a feature option on offense playing along side Kevin Martin. With Deng out of commission, Salmons is averaging career numbers with almost 19 points a game, 4.4 boards, and 3.2 assist. In the last five games he's averaging 24.6 points, including a season high of 38 points last Tuesday.

Ten games remain in the regular season, so look for the Bulls to ride his hot streak and grab the 7 seed in the east. They need to prepare for a possible match up with a healthy Boston Celtics team which recently got their all-star Power Forward, Kevin Garnett, back from an 11-game hiatus. And if that isn't a big enough challenge, they could very well meet the Lebron's or the Dwight's in the 1st round.

Blackhawks look to maintain their spot in 4th as the 1st place Sharks come to town.

The Chicago Blackhawks' quest for a playoff spot and home ice in the first round continues tomorrow night at the United Center as they take on the 2nd place San Jose Sharks. The Sharks slipped into second place behind Detroit after the Red wings' victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night. The Hawks seem to have regained their confidence with two solid performances in a row against Edmonton and L.A., but this Sharks team will present a much greater challenge. San Jose is a big, fast, and talented team that is playing for 1st place in the conference and home ice advantage throughout the playoffs. They bring a 3-game winning streak into the United Center after struggling for much of the early part of March. The Sharks are led in points by team captain Joe Thornton's 79, and are led in goals by Patrick Marleau with 37. The Hawks have fared o.k. against the dominant Sharks this season, compiling a 1-1-1 record so far in 3 matchups.

Nikolai Khabibulin is expected to start for the Blackhawks, as Joel Quenneville appears to remain dedicated to establishing a number one goaltender for the playoffs. The Hawks' offensive lines are expected to remain the same as Sunday's against L.A., but the defense pairings are pending due to day-to-day injuries to Cam Barker and Matt walker. After a stellar performance by the Hawks' defense on Sunday, I would personally expect the six dressed defenseman to be Keith, Seabrook, Campbell, Barker, Hjalmarsson, and one of either Aaron Johnson or Jordan Hendry. Puck drop is at 7:30 pm, and the game will be broadcasted in HD on Comcast Sportsnet Chicago, and radio coverage will be provided by AM 720.

~According to a Chicago Tribune report, Dustin Byfuglien has been seeing practice minutes as a defenseman due to the recent injuries to starting defensemen. For those of you band-wagon fans who didn't know what a Blackhawk was until this year's winter classic, Dustin Byfuglien was drafted as a defenseman and started there last season. However, Denis Savard liked Buff's offensive skillset and attempted to move him into a power forward. The jury is still out on what Buff can accomplish, considering he is still 23 years old, but keep a look out on this development. Some are speculating that Quenneville could be developing "secret weapon" line-up ideas for the playoffs that would involve Byfuglien playing defense, and some of the more offensively skilled forwards (Toews, Havlat, Kane, Sharp) seeing more shifts and therefore creating favorable mismatches as a result. Stay tuned.~

~The Vancouver Canucks won their matchup with Dallas on Tuesday night, moving them into a tie for 4th place with the Blackhawks. The Hawks remain officially in 4th place due to the fact that they have played one less game. The Hawks must record a win or an overtime loss tomorrow night to remain in 4th place.~

Bulls Look to Gain ground on Detroit without D Rose

With a victory tonight over the Pistons the Bulls will move within one game of the 7th spot. The Bulls look to continue their hot stretch at the UC, however with D Rose who is out with a bruised wrist. The bounced back after a tough loss to the Lakers to beat the Wizards. Despite it only being being a three point win it's still a win. With just 11 games left in the season only 3 are on the road. If the Bulls can't take advantage of this home court look for them to be gain ground on Detroit and maybe even close in the 6th seed. More to come after tonight's game

Khabibulin to potentially stay with the Hawks past this season?

Here is something I just found that nobody has really talked about, but definitely deserves some attention:

Nikolai Khabibulin likes it in Chicago and would be willing to stay. He'll be an unrestricted free agent July 1. Both sides have agreed to wait until after the season to address it. The Hawks also have interest, but it depends on how things go during the stretch run and playoffs.






The reason this report is so surprising is that it has been practically assumed all along that this would be Khabibulin's last season in Chicago. The organization understands that they have way too much money tied up in net, with Khabibulin and Cristobal Huet both earning very large paychecks. Perhaps the coaching staff and/or the upper management feel differently now about Huet than they did before the season. Huet has proven time and time again that he simply cannot be counted on to be a clutch goaltender this season. He routinely gives up soft goals, and has killed the Blackhawks' momentum on several occasions by giving up a bad goal at an even worse time.

Keeping Khabibulin would lead to various possibilities at the goaltender position in the future for the Blackhawks. Antti Niemi and Corey Crawford are both promising prospects in Rockford, and would love to get a shot. The Hawks can't keep these two in the AHL forever without giving them a fair chance at some point. Unless the Hawks gave up on one or both of these young goaltenders and put their faith in a Khabibulin/Huet combination again, it seems as though moving Huet would be the only other option. The question is, what team is going to take an inconsistent goaltender's hefty contract? Perhaps a restructured contract could be in the works, or a trade that would involve the Hawks eating some of his salary. Of course, as the ESPN statement says, this all depends on Khabibulin's play down the stretch and into the postseason. The future of the Hawks' goaltending situation just got a bit more interesting, though...and it is something we should keep a close eye on.

Who's Closing? Piniella's Dilema

With the departure of Kerry Wood last fall, Lou Piniella has a tough decision to make on who his top closer will be: Carlos Marmol or Kevin Gregg? Kevin Gregg, the experienced closer for the Cubs this spring, hasn't allowed a body across home plate increasing his scoreless streak to 8 1/3 innings. Marmol, on the other hand, has already proven himself to be a reliable set-up man late in games and could be one of MLB's best so a promotion from the Skipper would seem like the right move to make.

Any manager would love to be in Piniella's position given that he has to choose from two quality pitchers who can close out games. However, Marmol has had a few rough outings lately, pitching for both the Cubs and the Dominican Republic during the World Baseball Classic. He gave up a homerun and beaned a batter during his one inning stint against Seattle on Sunday. Earlier, on March 10th, The Dominicans were bounced early in the Baseball Classic by the Netherlands when Marmol gave up a double, an RBI-single and then attempted a pick off throw to first which missed its target completely, allowing the winning run to advance to third base. There was immense pressure on the Dominicans to win this game and it's obvious that Marmol couldn't handle it thoroughly.

Since spring training began Marmol has an ERA of 2.57 in six appearances. When asked about the opportunity he said, "I always feel like it's my job. I'm just proud to be on the team. It's going to be a good team, and I'm ready to go—whatever they decide." His confidence is evident but would he be willing to accept the set-up man role? "I don't know about that. I'll have to wait for the decision and see what happens. But I do feel confident."
Despite his spring performance, the set-up man only had two blown saves in 2008 with 30 holds, a 0.93 WHIP and a 2.67 ERA.

In terms of pure talent, Marmol should get the job with ease racking up a 2.13 ERA over the past two seasons combined. Piniella is expected to announce his closer sometime this week. He really can't go wrong with his choice but either way, someone's feeling will be hurt.

Chicago Bears to open season @ Green Bay

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Bears will open the 2009 season against the Green Bay Packers Sept. 13 at Lambeau Field on Sunday Night Football, the NFL announced Monday.

Charles Tillman drops Donald Driver in the Bears' 20-17 overtime win over the Packers last season.

The Bears also opened the 2008 season on Sunday Night Football, defeating the Indianapolis Colts 29-13 last Sept. 7 in the inaugural game at Lucas Oil Stadium.

In five seasons as Bears coach, Lovie Smith has compiled a 7-3 record against the Packers. By comparison, predecessors Dave Wannstedt (1-11) and Dick Jauron (2-8) combined to go 3-19 versus Green Bay.

Smith had won his first four games at Lambeau Field before suffering a 37-3 defeat last season that remains his most lopsided loss as Bears coach.

The Bears will open the regular season on the road for the fifth straight year and the eighth time in the last 10 years. The last time they opened five straight seasons away from home was when they did so for 28 consecutive years from 1940-67 while sharing Wrigley Field with the Cubs.

The Bears will open the regular season on primetime national television for the fifth time in team history. Prior to last year, the Bears opened on Monday Night Football with wins over the New York Giants in 1987 and Dallas Cowboys in 1996 at Soldier Field and a loss to the Packers in Green Bay in 1996.

The NFL also announced Monday that the 2009 regular season will begin on Thursday night, Sept. 10, with the defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers hosting the Tennessee Titans.

A Monday Night Football Week 1 doubleheader will be part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary season of the American Football League. The four teams in action that night began playing in the inaugural AFL season in 1960. In those games, the New England Patriots will host the Buffalo Bills, followed by the Oakland Raiders hosting the San Diego Chargers.

The three Thanksgiving Day games will feature the Packers visiting the Lions, the Raiders visiting the Dallas Cowboys and the Giants visiting the Denver Broncos. The Bears have not played on Thanksgiving since 2004.

The rest of the NFL schedule will be announced in April.

Chi-town...Stand Up

It's all about March Madness right now and it seems like every season a Chicago-born player leads his team to the Tourney and some times to the 'Ship. For example D-Wade in '03, Derrick Rose last season, and Eric Gordon as well. So I think it's only appropriate to acknowledge the hoopsters going hard as the hood they're from this year. First up is Sherron Collins, a product of Crane Tech who is currently the starting point guard for the Kansas Jayhawks. Fresh off of his career high of 32 points last Friday, Collins dropped another 25 points on the Dayton Flyers leading his team to the Sweet 16. The Jayhawks lost a lot of starters this year but Collins, like any other Chicagoan would, put the team on his back and is aiming for a second straight National Title. Last but not least is Jerel McNeal. Coming out of Hillcrest High, McNeal is now a Senior with the Marquette Golden Eagles and just last month became the University's all-time leading scorer. He wasn't as fortunate to get to the Sweet 16 as the Golden Eagles were outplayed by the Mizzou Tigers in the final seconds. Even against Mizzou's hectic D, McNeal proceeded to drop 30 points which most likely increased his draft stock if he decides to go to the League.

As you can see Chicago constantly produces some of the best ballers around so I'm pretty sure positive the NCAA will always to be plugged. Stay tuned...

Sharp has a storybook return as Hawks snap losing streak.

Sunday afternoon was just what the doctor ordered for the faltering Chicago Blackhawks, as they cruised to a 4-1 win over the Kings in front of a sold out crowd at the United Center. Perhaps the absense of Patrick Sharp was more of a hole than people originally thought, as Sharp picked up right where he left off, tallying 2 goals (including the first of the game) and a very pretty assist. Martin Havlat continued his stellar offensive play, contributing 2 goals, including an empty-netter late in the game to put away the Kings for good. While Sharp's incredible first game back was the main story in this one, perhaps a more unsung hero(es) would be the entire Blackhawk defense, who held the Kings to only 15 shots on goal. The best part about this stat is that the defensive lineup featured 3 players who aren't (or at least, weren't) considered full-time starters, in Niklas Hjalmarsson, Jordan Hendry (called up from Rockford this morning), and Aaron Johnson. It seems as though Joel Quenneville is officially focused on the playoffs, and may be toying with some line-up ideas to see what his best possible team can be in mid-April. At this point, Hjalmarsson seems to have played himself into a permament role with his play, and has been a very nice replacement for the recently traded James Wisniewski. Goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin looked fantastic as well, as his positioning and focus seemed to be on par with his play prior to his February 11th injury. Khabibulin surrendered only one goal late in the 3rd period when the Kings were on the power play.

The win today now puts the Blackhawks in sole possession of 4th place in the West, 2 points ahead of the Vancouver Canucks. It cannot be stressed enough how important 4th place is, as that is the cut-off for home ice advantage in the first round. While it seems likely that the Hawks' first round opponent may be the Canucks or Flames either way, the extra home game could very well be the difference between a quick exit and a first round series win. With the Hawks being the youngest team in the entire NHL (and I'm assuming in professional sports), heading to a very rowdy environment in Canada for the first two games would not be very favorable. This team has barely any playoff experience, and having an excited, loud, and intense United Center crowd behind them during their first taste of the playoffs would be extremely beneficial.


*What's ahead*

The Hawks' upcoming schedule looks very scary, to say the least. The only reason for optimism is that many of the games are at home. The next two games take place Wednesday and Friday at the UC against two teams that many consider to be serious Stanley Cup contenders: the San Jose Sharks and the New Jersey Devils. Many would agree that winning one of these two would be considered a success. After that, it's a game with major postseason implications on Sunday at home against the Canucks, and then off to Canada for a game with Montreal on next Tuesday night. Only one thing is certain in the Hawks' struggle to maintain 4th place: It will not be easy whatsoever.

Feeling Rosey

I have to give John Paxson credit for using his brain during the last draft. His #1 draft pick, Derrick Rose, is definitely a front runner for Rookie of the Year for the '08-'09 season. There's no doubt he's made a sudden and positive impact since his arrival in June, leading the team to 32 wins - one less than their total last season. Averaging a little over 16 points and 6 assist per game, Rose has filled the void at point guard for the Bulls and is shaping up to be one of the league's best at his position. He frequently eats up defenders with his speed and power but keeps a slice of humble pie on the side. "I've been playing decent and starting to get a little consistent now", the rookie responded when asked to make his case for R.O.Y. Saying that's an understatement is an understatement but this attitude is sure to get him the hardware at season's end. If the Bulls can win out and solidify a spot in the post season, the Chi Bulls will have their first Rookie of the Year since MJ won it 25 years ago.


Side note: Elton Brand won in '99-'00 but that doesn't really count...

Derrick Lee calls team USA disrespectful

So I'm sitting here watching Comcast sports net and Derrick Lee pops up talking about Team USA called him to see if he would like to come play. Derrick Lee was hurt at the time and told them no. Instead of just leaving it there D Lee called Team USA's request "disrespectful." He goes on to state that they knew he couldn't play for the Cubs so why would he play for team USA. I don't see how representing your country could be disrespectful. D Lee your a 1st baseman past your prime should be thankful you even got a call. Pretty sure they could have called someone else that had something left in the tank, which isn't you. Get real D Lee wake up and smell the coffee don't know if you noticed but your not that same guy that the cubs got. More over a number 6 hitter now. Can't drive in key hits when they matter and pretty much guaranteed to hit into a double play. Team USA wasn't disrespectful not at all. YOU WERE!

Sox Sign Gavin Floyd to New Deal

The White Sox have agreed to terms with Gavin Floyd on a new 4 year 15 million dollar deal. However, John Danks and Carlos Quentin refused to discuss contract talks at this time. Choosing to wait, both are under contract with the Sox until 2011

Chicago Blackhawks vs L.A. Kings

The Blackhawks look to bring their 5 game losing streak to a halt today as they welcome the L.A. Kings to the United Center for a 2pm puckdrop. Despite the recent slide, the Hawks remain in 4th place thanks to a Phoenix Coyotes victory over the Vancouver Canucks last night. Another reason for optimism is the long-awaited return of forward Patrick Sharp. Many forget that Sharp was a key contributor to the Hawks' offense prior to his knee injury that forced him to miss 16 games, and he led the team in goals at the time. His return alone should give a nice boost to an offense that seems to have already re-gained their confidence with 43 shots on goal on Friday night against Edmonton. Khabibulin will get the call in net for Joel Quenneville's Blackhawks, and he will look to deliver a better performance than his sub-par game on Friday. Hopefully, Khabibulin can find his game before the playoffs begin on April 15th. Today's game looks like a perfect time for the Hawks to get back in the W column as the Kings currently sit in 13th place in the West.

Ben Eager has been suspended by the NHL for 3 games because of an illegal hit on Friday, but Sharp's return means a forward call-up from Rockford will not be necessary.......Defenseman Jordan Hendry was re-called from Rockford this morning, most likely to fill in for a struggling Matt Walker.....According to a recent report, Quenneville has made the decision to make Khabibulin the #1 goaltender the rest of the way, as the Hawks look to find their groove for the playoffs.......Heading into today's action, the Hawks find themselves tied at 85 points with the Vancouver Canucks, and 3 points ahead of 6th place Columbus with 2 games in hand.

Young Class 4A Boys Basketball State Champs

Young has beaten Waukegan 69-66 in a hard fought battle of top teams in the state of Illinois. Led by Marcus Jordon Young proved why they belong. Jumping out to a 17 point lead at one point. Waukegan tied the game up at the start of the 4th qtr. But just like Young did vs. De La Salle Young took over the 4th qtr. Led by Jordan’s clutch free throws they take home the 2nd state title in School history.

2009 Chicago Bears....I's Your move

The 2009 NFL Draft is coming up April 25-26Th. The Bears have just closed out their mini-camp. The outlook isn't very good. The Key additions were so far OG/OT Frank Omiyale and S Josh Bullocks. With the losses of John St. Clair (signed with browns) and John Tait (retirement) the o-line is looking very thin these days and I'm not talking about weight wise. They have Chris Williams, Roberto Garza, Josh Beekman, Frank Omiyale, and Cody Balogh as the only O-lineman on the current roster. The Bears hold the 18Th pick in the Draft at the moment. Despite needing a legit number 1 wide-out I would think that the 6'6 310 pound tackle out of Arizona Eben Britton would be an ideal fit for the Bears run 1st mind set. Here is the Scouting Report from www.rivals.com The Good: A tall, well-built tackle with a smooth, coordinated first step out of his stance. Does a nice job setting quickly and has the arm length to keep defenders off of his body. Showcases good re-direction skills and fluidity in space. A very balanced tackle who is patient in his punch and rarely overextends in pass protection. Displays good power as a run blocker and loves to drive defenders off the ball.

The Bad: Not a great athlete and lacks ideal explosion and foot quickness for the position. Will struggle a bit with speed off the edge. Not real natural at the second level and looks a bit heavy-legged when trying to reach-block. He would be a good fit to anchor the line with Chris Williams for a good 10 years. All things start with the line. However, if Britton is off the board look maybe for the Bears to look at a Wide Out. With Harvin's Pro day he will be long gone off the board. It would come down between Darius Heyward-Bey and Kenny Britt. Britt whom is 6'4 215 pounds would be a good pick to compliment with Hester. Big physical WR that and stretch the field. Also he is a very good blocker, with the Bears loving to run he would be a nice fit. If he could stop catching the ball so much in his body he could really become that true number one.

I to touch on the Bears free agent moves or the lack of. Jerry Angelo was quoted in saying this was the worst free agent class EVER. He felt there was no need to throw money at guys that were over priced. But I believed that's what he did last year. Spending almost 100 million on a defense that was ranked 25th overall. I feel that the only person to really get better after he was payed was Lance Briggs. Maybe it was the scheme or the play calling but at time the Bears defense looked like a shell of their 2006 team that made it to the Super Bowl. At times this season they showed that side but the lack of 2nd half adjustments. Lovie Smith has taken over the play calling and they brought former Lions head coach Rod Marinelli in to coach the D-Line. Regarded as the best D-Line coach in the game. Can he get Mark Anderson back to where he was at in his rookie season? Only time will tell. Lovie was quoted in saying Marinelli was the Bears Key off-season acquisition. Those are bold words. With Roy Williams, Orlando Pace, Torry Holt, Byron Leftwich and others will the Bears make a move or like always sit back and watch? Lovie face it your what your record says a below .500 team that's getting older by the day.

Bulls vs. Lakers

I know everyone is watching the march madness right now but how about the Bulls tonight. They are currently up on the Lakers at the half 63-48. I know the game is far from over but you have to be impressed. Bulls are currently on a 7 game home winning streak. They have beaten some very good teams during this stretch. From the Celtics, Hornets, Houston, and Orlando. All playoff teams. Up a game and a half over Oklahoma City and Milwaukee for that 8th and final spot. Only a game and half behind Detroit for the 7th spot. I feel as if the Bulls are really coming together. Since Luol has been out it has really given Vinny the chance to get a set rotation. Ok say Bulls make the playoffs as a 7th seed. At this rate they would face Boston. Bulls make a game of the series push Boston to the limit or Cleveland. Does it make Deng expandable? I believe so. They have thrown so much money his way with nothing to show for it. John Salmons brings everything Deng use to be for no where near as much money. With 2010 coming up and all the big key free agents coming you could give that money to someone else. Starting 5 of D Rose, Dewayne Wade, Salmons, Chris Bosh and Tyrus Thomas could be a real nice look for the bulls. Rose is an exciting player that has the skills to get it done. With him really showing off his mid rage jumper. John Salmons has been an excellent addition for the Bulls as well. You must keep him. He can guard the better players that Rose and Ben Gordon can't. The Bulls are coming together at the right time but still a long way away. As I have written this post the lead is now down to three. But seriously Luol who? Good riddance to you and your soft side.
